This line wouldn't be so popular in real life, but it sure rings true in Hollywood, where sex scenes help sell and complete many films. The notoriously sexy Fifty Shades of Grey may be more excessive than most — with an estimated 20 minutes of onscreen intimacy, according to The Guardian. All that realistic bumping and grinding makes you wonder: What exactly is going on when your television screen depicts a session in the sack? Things aren't always as hot as they seem. Often, it takes many hours, possibly even an entire day of filming to get a short sex scene just right. For only 15 seconds of onscreen sex, Cracked estimates six hours or more of filming due to changing angles and lighting. Add in demanding directors and curious onlookers, and sexual arousal doesn't always come easy.

But Showtime's Masters of Sex has a special claim on nudity. Their sex scenes aren't there to titillate; they're there to educate viewers on the body and the country's historical relationship with sexuality. You'll want to tune in to the season-three premiere at 10 P. Still, there's probably no series on television right now that has to stage as many scenes with actors in the, um, act—so we went straight to creator Michelle Ashford to learn the ins and outs how these sensitive sequences are shot. If nudity's part of the job, it gets hammered out in the interview. We always honor that with any actor, and of course we did with Allison—we're hiring her for her acting, anyway. Sex scenes in films need to look believable, but obviously not involve the actors having real sex. For women, the genital guard looks similar to a plastic shoehorn. The male version of a genital guard looks like a sock, and has a drawstring to keep it fixed on the penis. These both are designed to be as invisible as possible to present the image of real sex between the actors. Often, genital guards are makeshift items fashioned from flesh coloured underwear or fabric, and the way they look depends on the type of scene being filmed and how much they can get away with wearing. Actor James Franco was recently accused by actress Sarah Tither-Kaplan of removing the genital guards of women while starring in orgy scenes. The casting director of the film where this is alleged to have happened — Cynthia Huffman — had this to say:. James is all about giving up-and-comers, actors and actresses and young filmmakers a break in this business. I feel horrible that anyone was made to feel uncomfortable but we went to great lengths to make sure all the actresses in the nude scenes felt comfortable and safe.
