Learn more about Professor Per Carlbring's research on his research blog. During the last two decades, Internet-delivered cognitive behavior therapy ICBT has been tested in hundreds of randomized controlled trials, often with promising results. However, the control groups were often waitlisted, care-as-usual or attention control. In the present systematic review and meta-analysis, which included participants, guided ICBT for psychiatric and somatic conditions were directly compared to face-to-face CBT within the same trial. Out of the articles screened, a total of 20 studies met all inclusion criteria. Study quality did not affect outcomes. While the overall results indicate equivalence, there have been few studies of the individual psychiatric and somatic conditions so far, and for the majority, guided ICBT has not been compared against face-to-face treatment. Thus, more research, preferably with larger sample sizes, is needed to establish the general equivalence of the two treatment formats. Objective: Psychotherapy trials frequently generate multilevel longitudinal data with 3 levels.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy CBT is a psychotherapeutic approach in which patients learn to understand their own thoughts and feelings and how this influences their behavior. During treatment, patients learn how to identify thinking patterns that are having a negative influence on their lives. For example, a person who is depressed may spend time thinking about all the things in life that would be better if they were not depressed or a person with anxiety might spend time worrying excessively about their anxiety. The goal in CBT is to come to an understanding that we cannot control the world around us but we can learn alternative ways to interpret the world and to respond to what happens around us. The treatment is generally short-term. CBT also works well for clients who want to improve their sports performance, succeed in their career or lose weight. Petra L. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
Depression is a debilitating disorder that affects a large part of the adult population every year. Yet there is still a lack of access to effective care for people in need. Cognitive Behaviour therapy CBT is an evidence-based method for treating depression that together with the increased availability of Internet services provides an opportunity to increase access to effective treatment. Internet-based interventions can be effective in the treatment of depression, but there is a lack of knowledge concerning which formats of delivery that can be used and if therapeutic alliance is of equal importance when providing treatment over the Internet. The overall aim of this thesis was to examine the effects of different treatment formats email therapy, guided self-help, and blended treatment in internet-based CBT for depression and to further examine the role of alliance in these treatment modalities. Findings from this thesis show that email therapy and internetbased treatment programs were effective methods for treating depression.
