But Colorbeam thinks its Cat 5 solution is ready for the home. The low-hanging fruit is the commercial market, where buildings have drop ceilings, long expensive wire runs, frequently-changing office layouts, demanding codes for energy efficiency, and in-house staff to maintain a networked lighting system that has more to do with networks than with lighting. Colorbeam employs the popular DMX lighting-control protocol for communications. The same Cat 5 used for communications also is used to power the fixtures, unlike some other solutions that require a separate wire for power. Gaudio says the company has been working on the product for more than three years and has more than installations large and small. Recessed luminaries can be connected to each other in a daisy chain. The amount of luminaries that can be connected on the same daisy chain depends on the wattage of the recessed luminaries being used. The maximum wattage allowed in one chain is 36 watts. LED tapes on the other hand, must be installed in parallel. This is what powers and controls the lights. Recessed luminaries use a RJ45 connector with a category cable, while LED tapes can use just about any wire but preferably a 16 gauge, or 12 gauge for very long distances. Keep in mind that the gauge of the wire being used determines how much distance between the light source and the DMX driver you can have.
